Show notes for Ep. 4 (Camille Giraudeau)
My guest on Episode 4 is Camille Giraudeau, a French-born, Dublin-based multi-instrumentalist who has been a key player in the international avant-garde metal landscape for the past two decades.
I’ve been listening to Camille’s music since about 2010, when I discovered his old band Smohalla through a review on the now-dormant avantgarde-metal.com. More recently, I discovered his solo project Dreams of the Drowned and eventually made the connection that this was the same person who had been in Smohalla as well as Stagnant Waters (his long-distance collaboration with fellow Frenchman Aymeric Thomas as well as previous Fatal Strategies guest Svein Egil Hatlevik). And then over the past few years, I’ve followed Camille’s wide-ranging contributions to the likes of Void (he plays guitar on their 2023 album Jadjow) and Dødheimsgard spinoff Doedsmaghird (he plays multiple instruments—including guitar, drums, bass, and keyboards—on their 2024 debut Omniverse Consciousness). He’s also playing drums in the current live incarnation of Dødheimsgard (though he has also appeared on guitar and keyboard in recent years). In short, he’s been a whirlwind of activity.
The jumping-off point for this interview was the promotional blurb for Dreams of the Drowned I, which described the music as “Melancholic, dense & psychedelic black / grey metal meets anarcho post punk, inspired by bands such as VED BUENS ENDE, KILLING JOKE, EMPEROR, BLIND IDIOT GOD, or AMEBIX.”
Stay tuned for Part 2, in which we hear about some of his more recent activities with Doedsmaghird/Dødheimsgard, Stagnant Waters, and more.
